Just finished are these 24 plastic Strelets WSS figures for Old John representing the 38th Regiment of Foot. Great figures to paint and good written references supplied which really helps. I will go straight onto 24 Hanoverian foot in marching pose, also Strelets.
I have also been doing a bit more painting in 2mm scale. However, it has become increasingly clear to me that I will probably never find the enthusiasm to actually use these figures (surprise, surprise!), as much as I have enjoyed painting them. The challenge of seeing what I could bring to them was the attraction but I'll probably stop there I think and pass them on.
The face on that drummer (2nd photo) is so full of caharcter - just wonderful. Now why can't they just make these in hard plastic / polystyrene?
ReplyDeleteThey are nice figures indeed Rob, free of that plastic 'infill' so common on the early Airfix sets and the plastic does seem less bendy than the old figures but I can see what you mean. Another improvement is the poses, just the firing and advancing poses plus command figures. The Officers faces and hair/wigs are wonderful.
DeleteLovely detail on the Strelets, their line gets better all the time. Are they just primed with a rattle can primer?
ReplyDelete2mm - possibly a marmite scale.
I prime everything by hand Norm, never been able to get on with sprays! I once looked at their Crimean war range, lovely detail and very accurate but way too many poses, some were just a bit silly. This seems to have changed with latest releases, for the better.
Delete2mm... well I really enjoyed the challenge, simply had to give them a shot. They won't go to waste though, handing them over to JBM who will actually use them even if he will need to soak them all off the bases. So I have now painted every scale between 2mm and 40mm what can I try next :)
You could always paint yourself in a bit of emulsion - that’d qualify as 1:1 scale!
DeleteDon't suggest it JBM, you know me, I'll probably end up giving it a shot!
Deletemy 38th Regt look great , many thanks, roll on the Hanoverians, impressed with 2mm painting, something i've never done , don't think my eye sight could copecheers Old John
ReplyDeleteMy pleasure John :) As for eyesight, I am very lucky to be able to paint without the need for glasses or a magnifier, even down to 2mm scale! I also have a very steady hand despite my years of devotion to drinking red wine :) So long as they last I'll keep on painting.
DeleteLee - thank you for your generosity mate. I shall name one of the regiments after you. PS after the Uhlans and artillery men there’ll be some PP WOTR figures coming your way. Can’t have you slacking off now can we!
ReplyDeleteNo problem JBM, going in the post this morning. As I said I enjoyed the challenge, simply had to try some and pleased how they turned out, but beyond that, well I know that you will find a good use for them :)
DeleteLee,
ReplyDeleteYour painting is certainly promoting those plastic figures. They look very nice but no butterflies from me - yet!
Pity about the 2mm but it was an interesting exercise to say the least and certainly shows it’s potential. One thing for sure you’re certainly cranking out the figures at the moment.
The Strelets are very good indeed and quite easy to paint I find. The details is amazing and at £8 to £9 a box great value. Look at the kilts on these Highlanders (link below) the check pattern is etched on, also the sock pattern!

I'm spending a few hours a day painting where I can with tea breaks in the garden and I enjoy listening to true crime podcasts in the background.
Lovely work on the Strelets Lee! I bought some of the 2mm figures many years ago with the idea of a possible ACW project however they are just too small (and that's before I had to start wearing glasses!). The terrain pieces are appealing though and I think they would work well with the figures for a diorama.
ReplyDeleteThanks Ian. It's going to be interesting to see what JBM does with them now they are in his hands :)
ReplyDeleteThe WSS figures are ace! Pity about the 2mm figures but at least they're going to a good home!
ReplyDeleteBest Iain
Well you know me Iain, don't take long to get bored with stuff so off it goes!
DeleteI enjoy painting 2 mm figures too Lee, but nothing up to your standard. They are great fun to paint aren't they? The amount of detail in something so small is remarkable. I also like that one can use plenty of imagination and bring out details to make different types of troops, especially hussars from reasonably generic cavalry.
