March already - time for more ACW's!

First signs of Spring in the air here, the Crocuses are popping their colourful heads above the ground and it's warming up .... just slightly.  I'm working out the months painting schedule and the plan is:

Old John Strelets mounted Confederate Generals set (x12), Strelets Union Personalities on foot (x35) plus assorted plastic Engineers and gunners, 4 lovely Russian Falconers and finally 4 Airfix US cavalry which are not on the order of painting list BUT I simply cannot resist them!

Geoff 2mm bases for half scale DBA. Now I'm back in the swing of things I'm sure I can get these painted as Geoff has been incredibly patient.

Noel The final 5 Epic ECW infantry sprues/regiments before we  start on the cavalry next month. This will be a total of 21 Regiments of Foot each of 80 figures painted so far. This will be a solid couple of weeks work.

April will then begin with more US cavalry for Mark.

'Battle Cry' ACW side project. The above represents a comfortable amount of painting for me and still leaves me plenty of spare hobby time for the start of 'Twydall' shunting layout and the new side project using Epic ACW sprues. I have now decided that I'm keen to carry on with this but I don't want to go down the whole expansive terrain building rout again so I'm going to build it based on the simple 'Battle Cry' ACW board game using 60mm frontage bases and a printed 13 x 9 hex grid fleece mat from Tinywargames with 75mm grid. I'm sure this will keep me engaged for a good 6 months or so at least.

The Epic ACW's are coming along and I'm enjoying doing some again. Progress photo below. I'm just deciding which flags to go with as the Epic flags are on the small side. I think I may go with wargame Designs. I bought a box of Union Cavalry and Zouaves from Ebay for just £22.00 which will give me my Union and Confederate mounted and dismounted cavalry bases, a couple of skirmish bases (2nd Sharpshooters?) plus the two  Zouave bases which is all I require. As the box includes 3 sprues each containing a command strip and 3 infantry strips there will be a leftover 60/80 figure Zouave unit going FREE is anyone doing Epic ACW can use it (Norm?).

Photos below show the fine Strelets Confederate Generals set. I noticed that the horses feature a mix of nosebands and non nosebands which seems to be born out as correct at the  time of the Civil war by research, a nice touch Strelets!). The black undercoat and flat brown drybrush is my go to method now for ACW's (both sides) and the Pony Wars commission, in fact I even use it for the Epic Pike and Shot as it quickly establishes high light points and gets all of the tricky pikes and muskets/rests/ etc done from the start and an additional careful dry brush of Flat Earth gives a highlight. Let's just say that it works for me.

The great man himself!

Superb detail in these plastic figures.

John Bell Hood, Texas.

Tried to get variety into the Reb uniforms.

Just bases and varnish required.

Todays painting, Zouaves.

A great value set for £22.00! ( note, same set for Rebs just Grey sprues!)

The alternative to a wet palette, useful for dry brushing and horse painting etc.

Pure nostalgia, Decades since I last painted Airfix US Cavalry!

Painting the Epic ACW's - test strips & description.

Following on from yesterdays comments re the Epic ACW's I wanted to add a few more notes about the way I am trying to approach painting them, I'm aware the hobby blogs are going to be full of similar posts as the sets begin to roll out and it will be interesting to see how others tackle this. I wanted to record a step by step of my method, the shades used, and my reflections on the product as a whole.

I started by taking the view that these are basically ordinary 15mm figures, much like the many other ACW's I have painted over the years so I could approach them in the same way. I quickly realised that it was not going to work and that I had to re think and start again with the Warlord concept of the Epic theme and what they are trying to do here. Taking a step back and looking at the strips of figures I realised that they are actually far more like 6mm strips in terms of production than conventional 15mm ranges, this was important because it completely changed my perception of what I could realistically hope to achieve with them. My 6mm 'speed painting' method has been tried and tested over many years and thousands of figures with the key being to add dots and dashes of strong paint, that is to say selected shades that cover in a single application over a very flat black base coat leaving some of  that black showing to represent areas of shade.

Having carefully selected my range of colours and the order of application I then asked myself what I wanted to achieve in terms of the overall look and finish of each base of 20 figures, units that reflected as accurately as possible the appearance of Civil War units, without painting levels of detail that would simply be lost when viewing at arms length. That said I still want the figures to stand a little close scrutiny but without being overly fussy. For me the key is a good choice of brushes that will hold a good point, pick up a blob of paint and apply it accurately and at speed exactly where I want it. These figures have been painted using an Army Painter size 00 for everything aside from the faces where a OOOO is used and the green bases where a size 2 is used.

Lets have a bash through a couple of strips to see how this works. First stage I take Vallejo (all vallejo) Flat Earth which is my go to 'Butternut' shade ( and yes I know it varied wildly but I'm trying to keep things simple here). You can see I'm picking out spots to apply the paint but leaving plenty of black showing. First image shows the first application completed. Next London Grey is used in the same way to give the impression of a unit in a mix of uniform, with just a few trousers here and there picked out with Azure Blue. This was done very quickly trying to avoid painting over anything else. Then Flat Brown is applied to the musket butts and along the rear of the stocks. Here and there I apply a touch of brown to beards, some rear cartridge boxes and a few belts before taking up my Flat Flesh and the 0000 brush with which I blob the hands and apply fine dashes to the faces. In any other scale I would begin with light brown for my faces but for these I just went with the straight flesh as you can see. Next with a silver/steel mix I run down the barrels (back to the 00 brush for this) and the officers sword etc. I then add the odd touch of Flat Red for a bit of contrast to a couple of blanket rolls, the drum etc, because it just slightly lifts the overall look. Finally I add some very fine lines of off white to represent bread bag straps etc, not to all the figures just to a few and it's job done!

I COULD of course now add highlights to the 'Butternut' and the Grey, but honestly in this scale I really don't think there is much point as the sheer number of figures per unit  is what gives the visual impact. I do however use my favourite Satin varnish which gives a bit of 'pop' without the effort of highlighting. this is just personal choice.

Basing is very quick and simple, PVA covered before picking up a strip and after a running small amount of glue along the raised edges pop it into the locating pegs. I then scatter my extra fine Javis granite mix before shaking and blowing off the excess. Once dry a few patches of 2mm summer grass are applied and the bare stone areas treated with Sepia wash which will subsequently be drybrushed with Buff.

And that's about it! Not perfect but I think it works for this Epic theme, if you look closely you will see plenty of black shade areas showing through but this is very much a part of the look I want to achieve.

Now all that remains is to paint the other two and a half thousand figures when they arrive!

Warlord Epic ACW's 60 test figures painted in around 3 1/2 hours, roughly 20 figures in just over the hour and that's with constant glances at Match of The Day! Plus of course basing time. I painted just two strips at a session using the 8 basic colours outlined above. Not great if you view the images blown up big, but in real scale they don't look too shabby I think?

Warlord ACW Epic Brigade box sets promotion!

Getting some great feedback on these over on the FB Epic ACW group page so sharing them here as a bit of a promotion! I love the Epic ACW's, they have so much forward motion in the poses and the shoulder to shoulder strips are just about perfect for the period. I'm able to paint these strips at speed so my commission prices are pretty competitive!

Warlord Games Confederate Brigade box, 300 infantry, 3 guns and crews and 3 mtd commanders. Fully painted for £285.00 (£9.00 per strip of 10 infantry, £15.oo for battery of guns and FREE mounted commanders). Fully textured basing as above is £25.00 extra.

Warlord Games Union Brigade box, 300 infantry, 3 guns and crews and 3 mtd commanders. Fully painted for £255.00 (£8.00 per strip of 10 infantry, £15.00 for battery of guns and FREE mounted commanders). Fully textured basing as above is £25.00 extra.

Rebs cost £1.00 extra per strip to reflect the different shades of uniform. For close up shots please see my commission painting page, scroll down for ACW's!  Contact me:  lgramson@yahoo.com

Some ACW's for a change and Napoleonic news!

Over the past couple of weeks I have been going through a sort of seasonal blues, feeling a bit up and down and definitely not helped by the political turmoil in this country at the moment. Having been a keen follower of UK politics for most of my adult life I can barely believe what is going on at the moment and what is to come over the coming week.

This weeks commission painting has been a brigade box of Warlord Epic ACW's, 300 Union infantry in 3 regiments plus the 3 gun battery and mounted officers. Just need to add flags and texture the bases to complete. Enjoyed doing some ACW's again as it's been a while. I have also taken delivery of the full ACW starter box along with 4 packs of metal command strips from Warlord which will allow me to build 44 x 60 figure infantry regiments split 50/50 Union/Reb for Chris in New Zealand, obviously this is a long term project but one I know I will enjoy. I must admit that I had not known that the ACW command strips were available in metal, the same strip just cast in metal and you get 5 of them to a pack.

This coming week I'll be painting for Graham and Tony before getting stuck back into lots of Napoleonic Prussian Epics!

Napoleonics now sold!  Aside from the above I have also hit that point once again where it's time to find something else to mess around with as an aside from my commission painting, and to this end I have now sold my 900 painted epic Napoleonics and they will be heading off to their new owner Mal this week who will actually use the figures, something I know I will never do beyond laying them out for photos or videos. I'm happy with this decision as anyone who has followed the blog for the last 10 plus years will understand, much as I still love painting soldiers my wargaming days are now long gone. No doubt I will find something new, starting with a couple of lovely Langton Napoleonic ships again like the little Frigate I did years ago that gave me so much pleasure. Was it really 2013!

New look, new commission!

I spent a little spare time this week working on giving the old blog a bit of a make over. I have added a dedicated Warlord Epic tab and also a YouTube channel tab featuring a few of the most popular and recent videos and a link to the full channel. As I have now sorted out my camera and tripod I intend to do a few painting tutorials going forward, probably around the Epic strips and my quick painting method.

My latest 3mm Ancient army for DBA is coming along nicely with the six bases of Phalangites which form the central Phalanx completed plus the two bases of Auxiliaries which will protect the flanks. This army is Late Macedonian Successor period and I have chosen the army of Ptolemy Keraunos (280 -279 BC) to model as it gives me an elephant command base. I spent a lot of time researching the mercenary figures and settled on the illustration below (Roman style shields and dress), and it seems to work OK in 3mm scale! Next I need two cavalry bases, one heavy ('Knights in DBA) which will utilise some of the Cataphracts I have here to distinguish them.

Command elephant base borrowed from my Carthaginian army.

New Commission. With the Epic ACW's now winding down I'm really pleased to say that I have a new long term commission to replace it. It's a period I have long been interested in but never painted. It's an all metal figure project in 20mm scale using Qualiticast figures. I think in the region of 600 plus castings (I have not yet had time to open the huge box!), the majority of them being mounted. The period? It's PONY WARS and I'm really looking forward to getting started on them in August, especially the opportunity to paint those lovely Indian ponies. The figures all come pre undercoated in matt black which is very useful. One week per month will be dedicated to this project replacing the ACW slot. Obviously more about this as I unpack and have a look through the figures.

The remainder of this month will be spent finishing off the ACW's for shipping then metal Peter Pig ECW's and my first shot at the new Epic Pike & Shot, 4 infantry sprues for Noel.

Blog v YouTube v Facebook and more photos!

It has recently struck me how few page views this old blog of mine gets these days, possibly because I post far too frequently with limited content but also possibly the blog has just had it's day when YouTube and Facebook hobby groups are so popular?

An typical post here has maybe 50 views on average, if I post in the FB DBN group then around a 100 views is typical and a short YouTube video of me mumbling into the phone camera will average up to 500 views after a couple of weeks, my record so far is 7.5 thousand on a video. But that said I like the blog because it keeps me in touch with that small group of dedicated fellow bloggers and followers and allows me to keep an easily searchable record of  just about everything I have painted over the past 14 years. Yes, I know its completely different media, this is just a general observation and I have no intention of giving up on the blog after all these years. Maybe it's just personal ego but as a painter I do enjoy sharing my work and also the feedback and interaction that comes with it and with that said lets have some more photos of model soldiers!

Commission update.

I have just completed the latest batch for Old John now all varnished and packed. Below are the 5 units of Les Higgins cavalry, just 20 figures in total but certainly a colourful bunch. Also 3 mounted drummers of the 30 Years War marked 'paint as you like'.

Les Higgins cavalry. Designed mid to late 1960's I think?

Next I'm moving onto some Steel Fist ECW Horse, first time I have seen these in the flesh and they are superb little sculpts although the swords are very thin and require careful bending back into shape. These are for Noel to add to his Epic Pike and Shott collection that I have painted for him over the last 8 months or so. Oddly enough I was expecting the usual 18mm scale of most new ranges these days but these are true 15mm and as such they are a great match to the slightly chunky Epic plastic cavalry. I'm going to enjoy starting these today and I think I have 6 x 10 figure units of horse plus a dozen or so mounted generals to paint and base. After that Noel tells me it's back to Epic ACW's again!

Steel Fist ECW 15mm (left) and Warlord Epic 13.5mm!

I also have more 2mm bases for Geoff to paint. I have to feel in the correct mood for working on these tiny figures as they can be very challenging on the old eyes so it can take me a while to get going on them but they will be painted.

The Pony Wars commission is on hold for a bit as I have now completed all the figures that I have here and are waiting for the arrival of the final 'Grey Horse' troop of 7th cavalry plus all of the dismounted cavalry which have been specially sculpted by Andrew Stadden. Unfortunately Mark has out of action for a while due to an incident involving a hobby knife cut that became seriously infected and resulted in a stay in hospital. Wishing you well Mark and I hope to see these new sculpts in due course.

New customer Stephen tells me that he is very happy with the initial four regiments of Epic French Napoleonic infantry (32 strips or 320 Epic figures) and that another 8 regiments are on the way so I'm pretty well booked going forward again.

AWI project.

I'm enjoying playing around with terrain now! Making roads and rivers, hills and woods etc. for the card table. The latest video from 'Gruff Mumbling Productions' is now on YouTube where I describe my use of magnetic printer paper as well as the fleece covered foamboard contoured hills, link below.

I continue to add the odd base of Peter Pig figures, starting next on some French and Hessians. So all in all I'm pretty well engrossed in the hobby at the moment and it's all keeping me very busy and engaged in my 'retirement'.

Coming along nicely now.

The first of the French crossing some broken ground in the form of ploughed fields.

And finally The Video :)
