Next!

Today I completed the four ECW regiments of foot for Graham, 2 Parliamentarian and 2 Royalist although the only real difference is the offices sash colours. Each are of 27 figures including the 3 command figures, and 2 are 2/1 ratio pikes to muskets and the other 2 are 'pike heavy' 1/1 ratio. Pleased with how they turned out overall and all are now removed from the caps and ready to pack in the morning. Next up are one of Old John's Strelets units of 24 1/72nd scale units representing British foot of the WSS.

Meantime my small (!) tester order arrived from Irregular, 2mm ECW blocks. I really like these things and wasted no time in sticking a few on bases and undercoating them. What you see there was around 30 minutes painting, my eyes were a little tired after todays painting but still I think I about managed to achieve what I had in mind. Please don't bother blowing the images up because this is very much impressionistic painting, if you stand back a foot or so they work as intended I think. The basing will require some very fine sand. I'm just going to do a few bases to begin with and see where this goes, but I'm really attracted to the idea of making some terrain for them and to this end these little buildings by Brigade Models are wonderful.

  1. M6 2mm stuff arrived today and it’s inspiring to see what you’ve done with then already. The buildings from Brigade look ace as well.

    1. JBM, I'm going to do the base of horse today see how they turn out. But I think it's going to be the basing that will give them the real finishing touch. I think trying to pick out individual figures and heads is the way to go rather than just running a brush along the front and back! I started to add tiny dots of flesh to the faces then thought 'why bother?'. First impression is that they will far better grouped on bases rather than individual units, I guess they could still be used to actually represent single units though?

  2. Just the job. I did a 2mm ECW army years ago, plus a napoleonic Quatre Bras set-up, but I can’t remember how I indicated casualties, as most markers will look over powering. In those days, there were a few specific 2mm scale rule sets, I think the horse and musket one mentioned something about covering 200 years, in the title.

I like the Brigade buildings. They would also work well with irregular’s 2mm WWII.

    1. Thanks Norm. Just a bit of experimental fun at the moment, but already I can see that a full day dedicated to 2mm could produce a couple of full sized armies, and that is a part of the attraction. Another would be the creation of a highly detailed terrain board with winding roads and streams, rolling hills and villages /towns dotted around, all on a 2 x 3 board!
