Just a few more painted epics.

Posting these here so I can link elsewhere. Today I'll be finishing off regiment number 3 which will make the best part of 200 figures painted in a week which included my first covid jab which knocked me out for 36 hours afterwards, just too tired to pick up a paint brush. No complaints and all back to normal now.

I'm liking these a lot, the speed at which I can knock them out is surprising even myself. I'm making myself no promises as to where I'm going with them, just enjoying the experience. Clearly Warlord are on a winner with this, I read that the launch has far exceeded initial sales projections, the initial production run was doubled but sales currently sit around four times the initial projections, pretty good business for Warlord, love them or hate them (as many seem to do).

At this rate I'll have the 2400 figures in my box licked in about 3 months :) Strips are coming in around 1.5 hours per 2 *(I'm  doing 3 at a go now so half a unit) not including basing.

Going to do 3 Union regiments next which should be even faster, but I'm going to trim down all those hats to kepis so maybe a round the same time.

*Edit: I know timings don't mean much to most but I like to have some idea of commitment. A 6 strip unit is averaging 4.5 hours so around 1.5 hours per 2 strips/base. I'm actually doing 3 at a time which feels more manageable than 4.

  1. D’you know I think they’ve hit the sweet spot there scale wise. Not too tiny but you still get that effect of men en masse. Wonder if they’ll do other periods?

    1. Hi mate,
They save an awful lot of time prepping up, the strips are ready to go, no need to clean away any flash at all and you don't even need to wash them in soapy water, there is no hint of release agent. I don't know what material they are cast in it seems harder than any hard plastic I have known and not at all brittle? The bases are definitely a different material (standard hard plastic?),and could do with a quick rinse. You paint, them and slot them straight into the bases, Bob's yer Uncle. My brushes are on fire at the moment JBM, but you know me, I could get bored with them at any moment!

    1. Nice little figures these Steve I must admit. You get an A5 (I think it is?) copy of Black Powder in the starter box, but I'm damned if I can read that tiny text, it's just a blur. Anyway, if I were to do anything with these I'd go with some old school ACW rules like the ones I played back in the 80's with 6mm figures.

    1. Cheers Steve, I'll take a look as my old brain is not up to learning a new set of 'modern' rules :)

    2. Steve, those read very well. You mention a consolidated set but link not working, do you have a set I could see please? These could be right up my street, OHW rules with a bit of added depth and nice period flavour.

    3. Ah, yes.. WEBS took my free subscription away so I had to rehome them.. they are now here: https://app.box.com/s/o15bctsvin2zcfes5zpjq48ajv6mrcfp

Full disclosure, they fully and completely owe their genesis to Mr Thomas! :o)

    4. Thanks Steve, now that's what I call an Old School set of rules :) I think even I could enjoy giving those a try out and you never know could get me back to gaming again. Very nicely laid out too.

    5. LOL.. layout was down to DG as I remember... the thing I like about them the most, is the dice activation mechanism... makes them very good for solo play when you force one side to throw and allocate dice first (I usually dice for it and high scorer gets to choose whether to go first or last)

    1. Thanks Phil, I must admit the shoulder to shoulder formation is very realistic.

  5. I have seen a lot of these on various blogs Lee, all well done, but yours are undoubtedly the 'best of show'. Simply wonderful!

    1. Oh many thanks James. I don't know, these days the pleasure is in the planning and painting then it all gets a bit less enjoyable, not sure why, something to do with the way my brain works now compared with 40 years ago when I completely engrossed myself in those little troops on the table (actually that sounds slightly disturbing but you get what I mean!

    2. I think that I may be a fellow traveller with you on this Lee.
Researching, reading, painting and planning occupy more of my time as well and also provide more of the joy. Games need to be few in number and preferably played out over a few sessions. They can get a bit boring in the middle parts or are quite unsatisfactory if played to a time restriction (and not quite finished). I think that in part, 'dreaming' about it can be better than the actual game, but also the planning and prep. is engrossing, edifying and just plain relaxing.
      Cheers, James

  6. Great work Lee, I can see the appeal although it seems odd that the Union troops don't have kepis? Had my first Covid jab yesterday and have also been laid low - but not grumbling!

    1. Ian, they are nice, but I will never understand why they did not launch with a reb and a yank sprue for the life of me given the follow ups they have in the pipeline. You get dark blue and grey sprues, shades of Airfix, but just the one sprue.

The jab just knocked me out for about 36 hours before being back to normal, I cant say I felt unwell really at all just very tired and hands and feet like blocks of ice! Slept it off on the sofa under a blanket :) Well worth it.
