15mm's on the C&C board.

Recently on the tabletop wargamers Facebook page the administrator posted a message basically saying that his page was for those who painted and wargamed with miniatures, not boardgames or paper soldiers! He got quite a backlash and quite a few members left the site. I took great pleasure in posting a couple of images of my 15mm figures on the Command & Colors board asking him where he thought I stood with that? He said it was definitely a wargame, as did several others, which was odd because I regard it as a boardgame played with shiny soldiers. Anyway, enough of that to do, it's time to play through the first test game on the C&C board.

I placed everything I have so far on the board, a random deployment on the first two rows of hexes, the terrain simply consisting of a large central town, (2 Victory medals per hex held), plus a few hills and woods. Standing back and looking at it felt extremely satisfying, having completed this stage in what seems like no time at all.

I'm going to play through this today using the rule tweaks described in the previous post. The coloured dice are in a plastic cup, I gave them a good shake and then blind drew the first dice for first activation, it was British and a roll of 2 gave me the minimum 2 activations. I advanced both the British light infantry units, one towards the town the other towards the woods. In C&C these are 5 block units as opposed to standard 4 block infantry units and can move 2 hexes and still battle. I then moved one of the generals to attach to the unit advancing on the town which will give a morale bonus should they be on the receiving end of a flag retreat roll. The dice is placed at the rear of the board and the next is ready to draw. I should add I used 9 dice per side and once all are pulled I will return them to the cup.

More to follow. I'm going to return to painting some 40mm's now (more Chasseurs) as this will give me my wargame fix as I do so, but I'll keep adding more 'blocks' here and there.

First 2 activations - Britsh light infantry advance.

  1. Hi 'Lee,

Bravo old chap! That looks really attractive and once you add some scenery options to it it is a cracking little set up.

A good wargaming friend of mine painted the figures that cane with Battle Cry - the ACW C and C game - and that also looked very nice.

Are you going to cover the other nationalities?

    All the best,

    DC

    1. Thank you Peter, I'm still not sure I'm quite done with this yet!

  3. Hexes = board game.. (LOL!)

Would it be worth basing your figures for quicker movement? Either rectangular/square that fits inside the hex, or same as hex size?

    1. Hi Steve, I'm sure there is an option to use magnetic bases for more conventional units on a non gridded board, it's something I am thinking about!

  4. Its a good look and a great idea for getting a game in. Quick to set up/take down, small enough to leave set up in a corner, and quick enough to be played through in an afternoon or evening if in the mood.

    1. Hi Ross, the game has been left set up while my wife is away in the UK, I like the fact that it's small enough to do that. But something is still bothering me of which more anon :)

  5. Good to see enough 15’s now done to get a game in. I have never understood why some feel so passionately about drawing a hard line between figure games and boad wargames or more to the point, those that feel so strongly about it, that they freely verbalise their distain. I hope the Facebook Admin reconsiders.

    1. Hi Norm, that comment caused quite a few members to leave, I asked him to be a little more open minded! I'm flying through the 15mm's and I do have hundreds of unpainted figures still in the packs that came to Spain on the first day.

  6. The figures really add a lot to the game I think. I've tried a couple of solo games with the blocks but it's nowhere near as much fun as using Tony's set-up with full size units and terrain. I think you have a good compromise there!

    1. Hi Ian, you can't beat Tony's set up, he has taken C&C to another level. My idea is to produce a set up small enough to sit as a single board on the dining table, I'm not there yet but this is a good start.

  7. If you take up Steve-the-wargamer's idea you could use small rare earth magnets so you can take them (or some of them) off, as I guess you want to track losses with figures.
I think they look lovely but that the artillery looks too much next to the other units but can't see a way past that...

    1. Hi Rob, as the figures are individually mounted on small steel washers I would have to go other way round now using magnetic sheeting as the sabot bases, but I can't find it over here yet, may have to order from eBay and get it posted to Spain. I'm seriously considering painting some command packs, but I know that will lead to me building fewer larger units. Its an option though as the individual basing is very flexible, I might just do it!

  8. They look lovely, definitely a wargame but also probably a boardgame? I look forward to more of your troops,15mm or40mm I don't mind!
    Best Iain
