It's all coming together now and fits comfortably into my painting alcove on top of the desk. 750 x 750 for solo DBN to my own '1776' variant. I painted a quick backscene on 5mm foamboard which I hope will improve the aesthetic appeal of the battles.
With around 250 figures painted I can't go much further with this project but I'm very tempted by the Peter Pig Wars of the Roses range as a follow up.
A few photos taken today of the general set up and the British/Loyalist/Hessian force on the march!
Pleased with the simple backscene.. |
And the latest short video from 'Gruff Mumbling Productions' shows a general overview of the project
.
Really good work with the background Lee. Great minds must think alike as I was just eyeing up the PP War of the Roses stuff. Have you read “The Hollow Crown” by Dan Jones a fantastic gripping history of the WOR, can see where the writer of Game of Thrones got his ideas!
ReplyDeleteHello Ian and thanks for commenting :) I was looking through the PP WoR range again last night and they are amazing figures, packed full of period character. I had to smile at those very familiar PP faces 'I'm sure you also commanded British Regulars in the AWI'
DeleteTo be honest I do little reading these days as I spend many hours painting and like to rest my eyes afterwards so mostly I watch or listen to historical YouTube channels whilst painting. I have a lot of WoR stuff lined up. I should read more as I used to though.
Cheers,
Lee.
Nicely done
ReplyDeleteThank you Neil :)

I am in awe of anyone who can paint something apparently so simple and yet so effective as your back scene. Very nice pictures and I hope there will be something to read of your DBAWI game. I am strongly tempted by DBSYW as I seem to lack enthusiasm for setting up a bigger game. Jim Walkley
ReplyDeleteMany thanks Jim. In my Twenties I dabbled with watercolour landscapes but turned out to be a far better painter of model soldiers :)
DeleteDBSYW works well as I have seen games played on the 'Unofficial DBA' FB Group. I too have little appetite for big games now days so this small set up works well for me.
Cheers,
Lee
Your backboard worked out very well.
ReplyDeleteThank you Peter,

The back scene looks lovely Lee. Well done 🖌️👏 Everything has come together well.
ReplyDeleteMy only slight criticism is that I believe you’ve painted too many British casualties and not enough for the colonial upstarts 😉
Cheers,
Geoff
Thanks Geoff. I have tried to be even handed with the casualties :) They come in all shades of Red, Blue, Green, White, Grey etc! Can't believe I have painted 4 packs of them (32). I'm looking at cavalry casualties now.

Lee.
Looking fabulous, Lee!
ReplyDeleteThank you Ray. I do hope that you are starting to feel better? Slow job but you will get there :)
DeleteCheers,
Lee.
Hi Lee
ReplyDeleteVery colourful set up, and the background scenery is a very effective addition.
I particularly like the camera set up on the tripod ready to take photos
My table is 6x6 foot and I have to balance on the top of a step ladder to get it all in!
I appreciate that your enjoyment comes from making the scenery and painting the figures.
But I hope to see a couple of games before you get too interested in War of the Roses.
regards
Paul
Hello Paul
DeleteThank you for the kind comments. I now have a mental image of you perched precariously atop a wobbly step ladder, camera in hand :)
I'm very keen to play some games on this small table after all the work.
All the best,
Lee.
I really like the grass effect in the backdrop, it's just a shame it will be out of focus in all your action shots.
ReplyDeleteThanks Rob, turned out OK for a quick job!
DeleteCheers,
Lee.
Hi Lee
DeleteMe perched on an unsteady ladder camera in hand is not a pretty sight !!
regards
Paul
Lovely looking figures and backdrop, I always fear for your figures when you declare a project done!
ReplyDeleteBest Iain
Cheers Iain. I have certainly passed on a few figures over the years/decades :) Might hang on to this small project as it has a lot of potential for small space games and I will no doubt continue to add the odd unit as and when I feel like it as I just enjoy painting them so much!
