Looking back at some of Old Johns ACW's!

As I cast around trying to find something that grabs my interest - no success as yet - I was looking back at some of my older commission work for 'Old John'. Surprisingly these 20mm ACW's (various manufacturers) were painted back in 2013! Many are what I suppose I would term personality figures representing some non combatant figures and well known Civil War commanders. My favourite was the set of three figures recreating that famous Mathew Brady photograph taken on 15th July 1863 'Confederate Prisoners from the Battle of Gettysburg'. Thought I would share some of these ACW shots again as it's been over 10 years now.

  1. Awesome figures - nicely done. 10 years on do you think your painting style has changed or even improved? I ask because I can definitely see a difference between the two or three things I still have left from 2013 and the stuff I’m doing now.

    1. Hi JBM mate. Spot on, these were almost all painted over a white base coat something I just can't do nowdays. Could say I was a light to dark man and now I'm a dark to light man :) That said for ACW shades it did work well.

  2. Very nice. My ACW forces always feature a fair few zouaves (for their “dash” and also a splash of colour). ⚔️⚔️

    1. Thanks Geoff. What scale are your ACW's?

    2. I have small ACW armies (both sides) in 10mm and 15mm. You’d have thought I’d have the common sense to stick to just one scale - but no 🙈

  3. It is such a nice scale, I often wonder whether we needed anything else. Many of these sculpts must tickle your re-enactor fancy, not the ACW bit, just the very natural human pose, that would look right in any clothing (ECW).

    1. I agree Norm, 20mm is almost the perfect scale and tend to be sculpted in the older 'slimmer' style unlike the majority of 28mm. Looking at the Brady photograph I'm struck by how slim those Rebs were and the cut of the clothing and amount they carry in the blanket rolls.

  4. great to see my lads painted by you, as to makers, Ulf Debbeler (German) based on the Gettysburg film, Hinton Hunt, Qualiticast, they have seen much action over the years

    1. Old John certainly has an interesting collection! I like the guys cooking and eating, sat playing a banjo, smoking pipes etc, all the small details that help to build that camp scene.
