Old Johns Ottoman cavalry.

I have only recently started painting Ottomans for John so it's still a bit of a learning curve coming to terms with the colourful costume and intricate designs. The most recent are these 6 Spahi Light Horse where I allowed myself a bit more latitude in order to reflect this. These are Ral Partha once again and the horses were mostly painted just requiring some touching up and green on the bases.

John sent me a few photos of some of his existing Ottoman cavalry collection and with his permission I share them here for the delight of the vintage soldier lovers amongst you, I'm sure John will fill you in on the makes and vintages of the figures.

Also completed this week was 32 Peter Pig Confederate infantry for Graham, always a pleasure painting the Pigs of course. They will get the final check over, I can spot a few socks for example that need touching in before I'm happy to let them go! 4 packs including a command pack so a few spare command figures.

For the week ahead I will be prepping up 24 ECW horse today, that's 3 more units of 8 cavalry towards Grahams  collection.

  1. Two fine collections (P Pig and Ottomans), I do like the Confederate look.

    1. Cheers Norm. I have established some basic shades of grey and 'butternut' now that mix well together I think, nothing too glaring. Decided to give this unit blue cuffs, they were of course simply sewn on to the roundabout style jackets and I like to think in terms of even the 'homespun' jackets being regulation issue when the grey dies ran short and have seen examples of these with the blue cuffs. Having seen period cloths and patterns I'm confident that the colour did not reflect the quality of the cloth, just the lack of stable dyes.

Btw Norm, I have a bid on some PSC late war Germans, infantry and heavy weapon sprues, bot of a punt but could see a little Bolt Action side project happening if I win it :) I really did not like the AB Germans for some reason, been looking around at metal ranges in 20mm but can't see anything that takes my fancy. I still have the rules, order dice, tanks and all terrain so little to lose in having another go.

    2. A good project that can be kept under control and in low numbers. I know what you mean about the AB figs, I have 2 packets that cost me £26 and I was left wandering what all the fuss is about. These are my only AB’s so cannot compare to other lines.

  2. Lovely work Lee. I like the Rebs in particular but I don't think I've ever seen any painted with blue cuffs before - nice touch!

    1. Thanks Ian. Light blue and black cuffs were fairly common early on, and there are examples of the 'butternut' roundabouts with them sewn on. I think black was more common among the Texan boys, I'm sure John will know.

  3. as nex ACW re-enactactor can confirm light blue cuffs are indeed correct and butternut can be any shade of brown, from very light brown to nearly black depending on dye used

Ottomans , majority came from Eric Knowles collection, great variety of makers, Minifigs , Hinchcliffe , Jacklex plus others i'm not sure of, painted Ral Partha ones i got off Ebay , unpainted one sent by a pal in USA, other figures came the late Stuart Asquith some years back, and there is a set of Zvedva ones too, if anyone has questions please just ask, pics of infantry will be done soon
    cheers Old John

    1. Thanks for that John. I know some of the SOSKAN lads had done loads of research on the tailors patterns and original cloths and dyes and I'm sure the cloth rolls were bought in from the States? You quite possibly shot me a few times when I was on the Union skirmish line in the Bucktails :) Great times back then.
